“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.”- (Rom.2:4)KJV
I remember as a little boy really liking this little girl who was in my class. I liked her so much that I thought I loved her. I loved her so much that I would chase her on the playground. I loved her so much that I would buy candy on the way home from school and save it especially for her. I would carry her books. I would even intervene if somebody was trying to bully her. I thought I was in love. Then one day I saw her talking to another guy and he was giving her some candy that I didn’t have that day. I then proceeded to ask her why she did it and she said she didn’t love me anymore and that she loved him now. Needless to say she never got anymore candy from me. The reason I bring this memory up today is to point out how fickle our love can be toward our God. Just like my story God loves us and pursues us. He chases us while we are on the playground of life. He brings us sweet blessing that he has prepared in advance. He offers to carry all of our burdens and He even fights all of our battles. But instead of us loving Him back we wait for something else to come along that we think looks sweeter at the time. In today’s scripture Paul ask a very important question. He ask if we despise the riches of his goodness. Do we despise the love that God lavishes on us? When this young lady did what she did I was quick to drop her like a hot rock. But look at God’s forbearance and longsuffering. God continues to pursue us even when we have chosen other lovers over Him. Paul goes on to say that we don’t know that it is God’s goodness; His never failing love for us that leads us to repentance. God loves us sooooo much that he keeps on loving us until we stop running and resisting and repent to receive His love. Thank you God for not waiting until we were lovely to love us.
